High Line

On Will and I’s first day on our own, we decided to head to the High Line, which is a public park built on an elevated freight rail line that was in operation from 1934 to 1980.  We took an elevator up to the rail road, and we were on an above ground park.  There was a trail that ran the length of the track, and lots of flowers and plants to make it more park-like.  They have big wooden benches and chairs built with wheels that straddle the tracks for you to use.  There is a little cafe cart and a place to sit and eat or drink while enjoying the view.  From the High Line, you get great views of the city, the river, and even NJ.  The High Line is being converted into this park in stages, and currently only the first stage is open.

We walked end to end, and then sat and had lunch while enjoying a view of the Empire State building.  They have one section with stadium seating that looks onto a big glass wall over one of the streets.  When you look out, it is as if you are hanging over the city.  Will got out of his stroller to run around on the steps a little.  It didn’t last long because the wind blew our napkins out of the stroller all over the park, so I had to run all over to pick them up so I wouldn’t leave liter.  It was a nice way to spend a few hours.

On the way back to the hotel, I found a play ground in some apartments.  No one was using it, so I didn’t see the harm.  Will took off up the steps and was running all over.  I was busy keeping him away from the drop offs at the top of the structure, when I stopped and looked around. . . . I was FOR SURE in the projects.  There is no doubt that we were in a low-income housing unit.  Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with that, but here I am with my jewelry on prancing around.  Instantly I felt uncomfortable and quickly loaded Will in the stroller and we high-tailed it out of there.  To make up for it, we stopped a little bakery in Chelsea to get some personal size cheesecakes.  🙂  By the time we got back to the hotel, Will napped until Jim got back from work.

Enjoying a closer view of the Empire State Building. We went there, but you can't see anything when you are right on it, and it is too expensive to go to the top.
