Thumbs

This is what we are trying to avoid!

This is what we are trying to avoid!

Will never really took to a pacifier.  People told us to be thankful because we would never have the trouble of trying to wean him from one.  The problem with that is that it is easier to take a pacifier away than to take thumbs away, and it was my fear that if he didn’t use a pacifier, he may become a thumb sucker.  From very early on, we have not cared if he stuck multiple fingers in his mouth, but we have never allowed him to actually suck his thumb.  If we catch him trying, we always pull it out immediately.  We have tried every type of pacifier out there.  We had a little bit more success with the hospital style pacifiers, but we always had to hold it in Will’s mouth.  As he got a little bit older, he almost used it more as a teething object than a pacifier.  In the past week, Will has tried really hard to be a thumb sucker.  Every chance he got, he would stick his thumb in his mouth and sometimes he would cry when we pulled it out.  In an effort to curb his use of his thumbs, we decided to give him an alternative.  Now when we pull his thumb out, we immediately pop in a pacifier.  We went back to the original pacifiers, and it seems to be working.  He has used a pacifier more in the past week than he ever has.  He’ll keep it in for hours and looks for it to put it in his own mouth.  We are slowly but surely turning our thumb sucker into a pacifier user.

We had early success with this one, but someone always has to hold it in.

Success! He now seems to love it!

Success! He now seems to love it!

He doesn’t enjoy being on his belly, and that is a time that he’ll resort to sucking his thumb.
